Last minute, indeed \u201cno minute\u201d preparation and no team partner by your side \u2013 that\u2019s what Emy Finch had to go through when she was called upon as a swing speaker. In round one of WUDC, several teams were discovered missing only when debates were scheduled to begin. So more swing teams than planned were needed instantly – and the runners’ team took every WUDC volunteer they found. That’s how Emy became an iron swing and had to run to debate in the first round. Emy is a debater from King\u2019s College in London who\u2019s volunteering in documentation at the WUDC Berlin 2013. Our correspondent Anja Pfeffermann talked to her afterwards.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Achte Minute:<\/strong> What was your team position as a so-called \u201ciron man,\u201d as a solo speaker?
\nEmy<\/strong>: First prop, I had to open the debate.<\/p>\n

Achte Minute:<\/strong> Wooh, how did you come up with a case on the motion \u201cThis house would create public housing for the poor in wealthy areas\u201d in just two minutes?
\nEmy<\/strong>: Well, I spoke about what they\u2019ve recently been doing in London with housing benefits, so\u00a0 I pretty much took that as my definition.<\/p>\n

Achte Minute:<\/strong> How was cooperation with your team partner \u2026 uhm \u2026 yourself?
\nEmy<\/strong>: Oh, I was quite lucky: Actually, a debater from New Delhi showed up when I was half way through.<\/p>\n

Achte Minute:<\/strong> You are here as a volunteer, not as a debater\u2026
\nEmy<\/strong>: Yes. Previously, I was supposed to compete. But more than debating I\u2019m rather interested in debaters \u2013 they\u2019re interesting people, often so passionate about debating. Actually, I\u2019m looking out for interviewees around here.
