They won over Tilbury House Minions<\/em> (Agnes Putri<\/strong> & Leonard M\u00fcnstermann,\u00a0<\/strong>Cologne) in Opening Government, There is but one God and He is not called Jesus<\/em> (Dan Lahav<\/strong> &\u00a0Muhammad<\/strong>\u00a0Asadullah Khan,\u00a0<\/strong>Tel Aviv\/Cambridge) in Closing Government and Cardiff A<\/em> (Raphael Hill<\/strong> & Calan Eskandar<\/strong>) in Closing Opposition on the motion “THBT the Democratic Party should take on a much more centre-leftist position and support a mass redistribution of wealth agenda<\/em>“.<\/p>\n

The final was judged by Harish Natarajan<\/strong> in chair, together with Sharmila Parmanand<\/strong>, Nika Jelendorf<\/strong>, Samuel Chan<\/strong> and Duncan Crowe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Best speaker was Teck Wei Tan with an average of 85.4 speaker points.<\/p>\n

The novice final was won by Cambridge AM<\/em> (Tudor Musat<\/strong> & Viva Avasthi<\/strong>) in Closing Government. They debated against Sorbonne ONU (team 2)<\/em> (Anais Fiault<\/strong> & Olga Kiav<\/strong>, Paris) in Opening Government, DJ YOLO SWAG 2015<\/em> (Dina Baiche<\/strong> & Jacques Li)<\/strong> in Opening Opposition and Nanterre-ENS Paris Saclay<\/em> (Xavier Olessa Daragon<\/strong> & Cai Fangyuan<\/strong>) in Closing Opposition on the motion “THW oppose human immortality”.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u00a0The novice final was chaired by Nika Jelendorf together with\u00a0Miriana Muntean, Susanna Ulinski, Samuel Chan <\/strong>and Ary Ferreira da Cunha.<\/strong><\/div>\n
Tudor Musat was announced best novice speaker with an average of 75.79 speaker points.<\/div>\n

      Centrale Open took place on the 9th and 10th of December 2016 and was organized by Claire Mayer<\/strong>, Mehdi Thomas<\/strong> and Aion Feehan<\/strong><\/p>\n

      The CA team consisted out of Sharmila Parmanand, Sella Nevo\u00a0<\/strong>and Harish Natarajan. The best VDCH team was Tilbury House Minions, making it into the grand final. Overall it was a very successful competition for VDCH teams, having four of them making the break.<\/p>\n

      The motions:<\/p>\n

      Rd 1<\/strong>:\u00a0THBT states should ban the positive depictions of former oppressive leaders.<\/p>\n

      Rd 2<\/strong>:\u00a0THBT when allocating resources to their children, poor families should allocate most of their resources to support the most talented child in the family.<\/p>\n

      Rd 3<\/strong>: THW grant human rights to any machine that passes the “Extended Turing Test”.<\/p>\n

      Info slide: An Artificial Intelligence machine (such as a robot) passes the “Extended Turing Test” if through extended conversation a human being cannot distinguish between the machine and an actual human.<\/em><\/p>\n

      Rd 4<\/strong>:\u00a0THBT African-American parents should teach their children to distrust and avoid contact with the police.<\/p>\n

      Rd 5<\/strong>:\u00a0THW bail out failing established newspapers.<\/p>\n

      SF<\/strong>:\u00a0THW use the Inquisitorial system in the Criminal Justice System (as opposed to the Adversarial one).<\/p>\n

      NF<\/strong>:\u00a0THW oppose human immortality.<\/p>\n
