The team “Alternative Facts A<\/em>“\u00a0<\/em>(Ieuan Skinner<\/strong>\u00a0&\u00a0Liam Dodd<\/strong>, Swansea)\u00a0<\/strong>won the final of the Swansea Open 2017\u00a0from\u00a0Closing Government<\/em>. They won over\u00a0Birmingham That\u2019s So Rosie <\/em>(Tommy Cave<\/strong>\u00a0&\u00a0Rosalie Butcher<\/strong>) in Opening Government,\u00a0Generic Team Name <\/em>(Sophie<\/strong> Johnstone<\/strong>, Cardiff, &\u00a0Ryan F.<\/strong>, Hull) in Opening Opposition, and\u00a0The Craig David Comeback Tour <\/em>\u00a0(Craig<\/strong> McDonald<\/strong>, Cardiff &\u00a0David Larke<\/strong>, Nottingham Trent) in Closing Opposition on the motion \u201cTHR the rise and domincance of aspirational narratives in western politics<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n

The final was judged by\u00a0Paige Skinner<\/strong>\u00a0in chair, together with\u00a0Marcus Lea, Joe Osbourne, Megan Thomas, Ben Falkner, Lucy Murphy, <\/strong>and Jack Stanley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Best speaker was\u00a0Tommy Cave<\/strong>\u00a0with an average of\u00a081.75<\/em>\u00a0speaker points.<\/p>\n

Emma Meadows<\/strong>\u00a0was announced best novice speaker with an average of 74 speaker points.<\/p>\n

Organizer of this year\u2019s edition was\u00a0Bethan Nankivell<\/strong>. The CA team consisted of\u00a0Lucy Murphy<\/strong> and Jack Stanley<\/strong> and the tournament was held on Saturday 11th<\/sup> February.<\/p>\n

    Rd 1: This House regrets the resignation of David Cameron as PM of the UK.<\/p>\n

    Rd 2: This House believes that religious leaders (e.g.; Archbishop of Canterbury and the Pope) shouldn’t comment on political matters (e.g.; National elections, International relations, UN policies etc.)<\/p>\n

    Rd 3: This House believes that EU member states should end all negotiations with Turkey regarding EU membership, and deny membership.<\/p>\n

    Infotext: There are currently 28 member states in the EU. To join the EU a country must be accepted individually by each member state. Turkey entered negotiations to gain membership in 2005. The Turkish Foreign minister has expressed a desire for a final answer from the European Heads of States.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Rd 4: This House would remove the ‘Special Classification’ for killing\/harming a police officer.<\/p>\n

    Infotext:<\/em>‘Special Classification’ is increased sentencing for a crime committed against a police officer. E.g.; Assaulting a police officer carries a higher sentence than assaulting a citizen In some states in America the death of a police officer can result in the death penalty.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Final: This House regrets the rise and dominance of aspirational narratives in western politics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
