In the English division of the 2017 Pan-American Universities Debating Championships<\/a>, the team\u00a0Rochester PK<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>(Miriam Kohn,<\/strong> Chris Perkins<\/strong>) emerged victorious from Closing Government on the grand final\u00a0motion \u201cThis house prefers\u00a0a world where American and Canadian Multi-National Corporations in South America adhere to the environmental and labour standards of their home countries.” They debated against ULV LM<\/em>\u00a0(Kandin Maraquin, Tanner Long<\/strong>) in Opening Government, Cornell JL <\/em>(Inbum Lee, Safwan Jalal<\/strong>) in Opening Opposition, and UCLA KP<\/em> (Arun Prakash,\u00a0Filipp Krasovsky<\/strong>) in Closing Opposition after the top three seeds of the tournament dropped in semifinals.<\/p>\n

The final was chaired\u00a0by Emanuel Waddell\u00a0<\/strong>judging with the panel of\u00a0Lindsey Dixon, Kenneth Newby, Cody Walitzer, <\/b>and Allison Morrell.
\n<\/b><\/p>\n

Kaitlyn Hall<\/strong> and Matt Aust<\/strong> of Pacific Lutheran University win the Spanish division final.<\/p>\n

The top speaker of the English division was Marina Tan <\/strong>of Yale ST <\/em>with speaker point average of 81.83\u00a0& the top speaker of the Spanish division was\u00a0Juli\u00e1n Triana Vargas<\/strong> of Sergio JV,\u00a0<\/em>who averaged 77.16 speaker points.<\/p>\n

Syed Reefat Aziz<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0of Rochester AH<\/em> was the best ESL speaker\u00a0in the English language division for the second year running with an average of\u00a076.5<\/span><\/em> speaker points.<\/p>\n

    Round 1<\/strong>: This house would\u00a0make the directors of major governmental science and technology organizations elected positions (e.g. Director of Environmental Protection Agency, head of National Science Foundation, Minister of Science and Technology)<\/p>\n

    Round 2<\/strong>: This house believes that\u00a0governments should depopulate areas with few viable economic activities<\/p>\n

    Round 3<\/strong>: This house believes that\u00a0the feminist movement should oppose presumptive custody in favor of women in cases of divorce<\/p>\n

    Round 4<\/strong>: This house believes that\u00a0it is legitimate for states to deny residency to immigrants who openly contradict their predominant values.<\/p>\n

    Round 5<\/strong>: Info slide: Robot tax: a tax on corporations levied in proportion to the company’s use of artificial intelligence in the production, distribution and sale of its goods and services.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Artificial intelligence: the development of computer systems able to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making and so on.<\/em><\/p>\n

    This house would institute a “robot tax.”<\/p>\n

    Round 6<\/strong>: This house believes that\u00a0minority groups should not reclaim slurs that have been directed against them<\/p>\n

    Quarterfinals<\/strong>: You are a citizen living in today’s world. You have the ability to create a perfect world by picking a random child by global lottery and condemning them to a condition of abject misery. The lottery is unbiased. The child will endure all the world’s extreme suffering in perpetuity (i.e. lack of human contact, torture, starvation, disease). The child’s suffering creates a world without war, famine, disease, or poverty: there is perfect prosperity and happiness.<\/em><\/p>\n
