Winners of Amsterdam Open: Jelte Schievels and David Metz – \u00a9 David Metz<\/p><\/div>\n

They debated against\u00a0In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary: come again?\u00a0<\/em>(Anastasia Grishkova<\/strong>, KCL\u00a0&\u00a0Bas T\u00f6nissen<\/strong>, St. Andrews) in Opening Opposition,\u00a0Wong Call, Bagequit<\/em> (Brian Wong<\/strong>, Oxford & Johan Bage<\/strong>, Stockholm) in Closing Government and\u00a0You are fake news\u00a0<\/em>(Weronika Mincewicz-Podrecka<\/strong>, Leiden\u00a0&\u00a0John Tsopanis<\/strong>, ULU) in Closing Opposition.<\/p>\n

The final was judged by Ybo Buruma<\/strong> in chair, together with Daan Welling<\/strong>, Roel Becker<\/strong>,\u00a0Sharmila Parmanand<\/strong>, Marike Breed\u00a0<\/strong>and four other judges.<\/p>\n

The Pro-Am final was won by Lawsoc take us to the burn unit (<\/em>Laura Hogan<\/strong> and Rachael Mullally<\/strong>, UCD Lawsoc)\u00a0in Closing Opposition.<\/p>\n

They debated against \u00a0Leiden Z<\/em> (Beatriz Mel\u00e9ndez<\/strong> &\u00a0Jonas Heid<\/strong>) in Opening Government , Albanian agoculture college C<\/em> (Caoimhe Gethings<\/strong> & Leon Langdon<\/strong>, UCD LawSoc) in Opening Opposition and Just so you know: Cato is a farmer<\/em> (Cato Brinkhof<\/strong> & Jop Flameling<\/strong>, Schoolies) in Closing Government on the motion:\u00a0THW set a narrow maximum difference between the highest and lowest wage within its borders (e.g. if the limit is EUR10,000, if the lowest wage is EUR 20,000, then the highest cannot be more than e.g. EUR 30,000)<\/em><\/p>\n

The Pro-Am final was judged by Daan Welling (chair), Cindy Williams, Tom Powe and two more judges.<\/p>\n

Emma Lucas<\/strong> (Leiden) was declared best open speaker with an speaker average of 82. Best novice speaker was\u00a0Rachael Mullally<\/strong> (UCD LawSoc) with an speaker average of 78.4.<\/p>\n

The tournament was organized by ASDV Bonaparte<\/strong> and convened by Davy Fung<\/strong>.
\nThe CA team were Roel Becker, Sharmila Parmanand and Nick Zervoudis.<\/p>\n

R2:\u00a0<\/strong>THR the rise of the sharing economy
\nInfo-Slide:\u00a0‘Sharing economies’ allow individuals and groups to make money from underused assets. In this way, physical assets<\/em>
\n are shared as services. For example, a car owner may allow someone to rent out her vehicle while she is not using it, or a condo owner may rent out his condo while he\u2019s on vacation.<\/em>
\n Some examples of the sharing economy include:<\/em>
\n \u2022 Hospitality and Dining: CouchSurfing, Airbnb, Feastly, LeftoverSwap<\/em>
\n \u2022 Automotive and Transportation: RelayRides, Hitch, Uber, Lyft, Getaround, Sidecar<\/em>

R3:\u00a0<\/strong>THBT the EU should implement a cap & trade system for refugees
\nInfo-Slide:\u00a0For the purposes of this debate, a ‘cap and trade’ system means that each participating country will be given a quota they are obliged to fulfil (cap). States are be able to pay other countries to take up some (or all of) the oibligation to fulfil that quota (trade).<\/em><\/p>\n

R4:\u00a0<\/strong>THR the decline of authorative criticism
\nInfo-Slide:\u00a0For the purpose of this debate, “decline of authorative criticism” refers to the phenomenon that critics of art and entertainment lose audience and authority, while the voice of ordinary people (for example through forums) is articulated more clearly and found more important.<\/em><\/p>\n

R5:\u00a0<\/strong>THBT Asian countries should pivot away from partnerships with the US and seek closer ties with China<\/p>\n

Semi Final:<\/strong>\u00a0THR the rise of megacities in the developing world
\nInfo-Slide:\u00a0A megacity is usually defined as a metropolitan area with a total population in excess of ten million people.<\/em>
\n As of 2017, there are 37 megacities in existence. The largest of these are the metropolitan areas of Tokyo and Greater Jakarta, each of these having a population of over 30 million inhabitants, with 38.8 million and 31.5 million respectively.<\/em>
\n The UN predicts there will be 41 megacities by 2030.<\/em><\/p>\n
