Breaking 9th seed, Darion Hotan <\/strong>and Sam van Elk<\/strong> from Kings College London proceed to win the 2017 Oxford Intervarsity. The tournament’s Chief Adjudicators were Evan Lynyak, Sella Nevo, Sophie Large, Teck Wei Tan,<\/strong> and Joshua Bailey<\/strong>. The tab team, SUULUU Candles<\/em>, was led by Roxana Legezynska<\/strong> and included Katherine Dunbar, Steven Roy, Alex Murray, Joseph Sisson, <\/strong>and Jiwoo Won.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Debating as KCL A,<\/em> Darion and Sam proposed that \u201cAssuming it could be done peacefully, this House would replace all existing governments with a single global democratic government.”\u00a0In Opening Opposition was Tel Aviv AD<\/em> (Dan Lahav<\/strong>, Ayal Hayut-Man<\/strong>); in Closing Government was Cambridge A<\/em> (Matt Hazell, Alasdair<\/strong> Donovan<\/strong>); and in Closing Opposition was BPP A<\/em> (Muhammad<\/strong> Asadullah Khan, Steven Rajavinothan<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

Adjudicating the Open Final was Sophie Large in the chair, with Evan Lynyak, Josh Bailey, Syed Saddiq, Ben Dory, Joe Mayes,<\/strong> and Owen Mooney.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Tel Aviv was luckier in the ESL Final, however, where Tel Aviv NT<\/em> (Noam Dahan, Tom Manor<\/strong>) were recognized ESL Champions on the motion “This House would ban the creation of all artificial conscious beings.” Their extension on consciousness and the creation of false narratives of choice by AI beat Opening Government GUU GB<\/em> (Matej Ballatey, Noemie Gauthier<\/strong>), Opening Opposition HSE Moscow<\/em> (Danil Kustin, Ivan Velentey<\/strong>), and Closing Government IIUM A<\/em> (Khalis bin Khalid, Shitab Daiyan Akash<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

The panel of the ESL Final was chaired by Kaity Crowe<\/strong> and included Brian Wong, Debi Ogunrinde,<\/strong> Dhruva Bhat, <\/strong>redacted, and Floris Hostelge<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

An American school won the Novice Final, representing yet another continent attending the prestigious tournament. Stanford PS<\/em> (Lorenzo Mariano de la Puente<\/span>, Jasmine Sun<\/strong>) won from on the motion that “This House would require all sold products to clearly display their price in Dead Children Currency,” competing against Cambridge JT<\/em> (Jin Hsi Gabriel Tan, Joy Jia<\/strong>) in Opening Government<\/span>, Stanford RY<\/em> (Vivian Yang, Arjun Ramani<\/strong>) in Opening Opposition, and Cornell C<\/em> (<\/em>Ajay Kunapuli, Jin Mo Koo<\/strong>) in Closing Opposition.<\/p>\n

The novice final was chaired by Jamie Jackson<\/strong>, with Duncan Crowe, Valerie Lim, Rachel O’Nunain, Milan Vignjevic, Rosa Thomas,<\/strong> and Joe Mayes<\/strong> paneling.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dan Lahav was best speaker in both the Open and ESL category with an average of 84.6 speaker points, followed by his partner Ayal Hayut-Man who achieved an average of 84.4 speaker points.<\/p>\n

Novice Final: <\/strong>Info Slide: For the purposes of this debate, saving the life of a child via charity costs approximately 1000$. A \u201cDead Children Currency\u201d is the cost of an item, translated into the number of children that could be saved from death using that amount of money. Thus, a brand new sedan might cost about 28 dead children, a meal at a nice restaurant might cost about 2 dead child cents, and a 320,000$ luxury doghouse costs about 320 dead children.<\/em><\/p>\n

ESL Semifinals: <\/strong>Info Slide: Poland’s ruling right-wing Law and Justice party have begun to enact reforms designed to curtail the independence of the judiciary and the free press.
