They won the final from Opening Government defeating \u2018<em>Too early for a midlife crisis<\/em>\u2019 (<strong>Dean Foley<\/strong>, Manchester, and <strong>Matthew Oldham<\/strong>, former Lancaster) in Opening Opposition, \u2018<em>Bulgaro-Serbian school of political correctness<\/em>\u2019 (<strong>Radko Nedyalkov<\/strong>, UCL, and <strong>Monica Naydenova<\/strong>, Sofia University) in Closing Government, and \u2018<em>Durham B<\/em>\u2019 (<strong>Tim Sharpe <\/strong>and <strong>Martha Muir<\/strong>) in Closing Opposition on the motion \u2018<em>This House would nationalise Facebook and Twitter<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Final was judged by <strong>Mark Wilson<\/strong> in the chair, and <strong>Owen Mooney<\/strong>, <strong>Rosalie Butcher<\/strong>, <strong>Nicole Lui<\/strong>, and <strong>Nisha Telesford<\/strong> on the panel.<\/p>\n<p>The Top Speaker of the tournament was Dean Foley with an average of 79.4. The Birmingham IV Chief Adjudicators were Owen Mooney, <strong>Bethany Garry<\/strong>, and <strong>Mackenzie Tse<\/strong> and was convened by <strong>Dan Wood<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament took place on December 9<sup>th<\/sup> and 10<sup>th<\/sup>. Due to snow, many participants of Day One were unable to attend for Day Two. Examples include Tokyo, Shanghai, Mexico City, Jakarta and Delhi.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>R2:<\/strong> This House believes that state support for the film industry (tax relief, subsidies, free access to public spaces etc.) should only apply to original works, and not reboots, sequels or re-interpretations of existing media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R3:<\/strong> This House believes that female music stars should emphasise a community of women with duties to one another over individual success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R4:<\/strong> This House regrets the focus of criticism of the Iraq war on the war&#8217;s legality.<\/p>\n<p><em>Info text: The Iraq War refers to the 2003 invasion of Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein by a US led coalition. The legality of the war was ambiguous, with initial claims of Iraq possessing WMDs being unfounded, but crimes of aggression not being recognised as war crimes by the ICC.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>R5:<\/strong> This House believes that the west should sanction Saudi Arabia over its war in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p><em>Info text: The Yemeni Civil War is a conflict that began in 2015 between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels. Saudi Arabia has intervened to support the Yemeni government against the Houthis, with a bombing campaign, naval blockade, and troop deployments.
