Leiden TBA, the Winners of the Tournament – \u00a9David Metz<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n
The Roosevelt Open 2018 in Middleburg was won by Leiden TBA\u00a0<\/em>(David Metz<\/strong> and\u00a0Joas Bakker<\/strong>) from Closing Opposition. They debated the final on the motion “Given the choice, THBT US Supreme\u00a0 Court Justices should be elected by a vote amongst federal judges rather than a popular vote” against\u00a0DSDC Orange\u00a0<\/em>(Lukas Joosten<\/strong> and\u00a0Elian Lavrijsen<\/strong>) in Opening Government,\u00a0Pure Esoteric Wisdom<\/em> (Tanya Shrivastava\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Fabian Beitsma;\u00a0<\/strong>Delft) in Opening Opposition and\u00a0Leiden, Mike is your Problem now\u00a0<\/em>(Roel Schoenmackers\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Lotte Classen<\/strong>; Cicero) in Closing Government.<\/p>\n The final was chaired by\u00a0Lisa Schallenberg\u00a0<\/strong>with Daan Spackler<\/strong>, Jeroen Wijnen,\u00a0<\/strong>Milos Marjanovic\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Simone Landman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Novice Final of the tournament was won by Elisabeth&AnnaDSDC<\/em> (Elisabeth Pel\u00a0<\/strong>and Anna<\/strong>\u00a0Wesdorp<\/strong>) on the motion “THO the rise of social media influencers“.<\/em><\/p>\n The best speaker with an average of 80.8 was David Metz from the winning team. The CA team consisted out of\u00a0Melda Eren<\/strong>, Milos Marjanovic,\u00a0Roel Becker\u00a0<\/strong>and Jeroen Wijnen as DCA.<\/p>\n Roosevelt Debating society organized the tournament.<\/p>\n The Break: The Motions:<\/strong><\/p>\n Round 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Infoslide:\u00a0An “Opinio-system” of education is one in which twice a year students can vote to replace a teacher by a different teacher.<\/em><\/p>\n THS an Opinio System of Education<\/p>\n Round 2:\u00a0<\/strong>Infoslide: A recall election is a referendum by which voters can remove an elected official from office through a direct vote before that official’s term has ended. They are initiated when sufficient voters sign a petition. A recall ballot consists of two questions: 1. should this person be recalled. 2. who should be their replacement. THS recall elections for national leaders (i.e. presidents, prime-ministers, ministers)<\/p>\n Round 3:<\/strong>\u00a0TH as the EU would significantly increase sanctions on Russia as opposed to lifting them<\/p>\n Round 4<\/strong>:\u00a0THBT religious parents should NOT teach morality to their underage children through religious context (e.g. \u201cit is a sin to lie\u201d; “help thy neighbour” etc.)<\/p>\n Round 5:\u00a0<\/strong>THW allow workers to sell their rights in exchange for higher pay (e.g. health and safety protections, rights to maternity\/ paternity leave etc.)<\/p>\n Semi-Final:\u00a0<\/strong>THBT music streaming services (e.g.Spotify, Apple etc.) do more harm than good<\/p>\n Novice Final:\u00a0<\/strong>Infoslide: A Social Media Influencer is a user on social media who has established credibility in a specific industry. A social media influencer has access to a large audience and can persuade others by virtue of their authenticity and reach. E.g.
