The Grand Final of the Restricted Mara Open 2020 has been won by MWS MWS A & W<\/em> (Wee-ern, Avinash<\/strong>).\u00a0 Speaking in Closing Government, they faced Piali’s Peeps<\/em> (Aryan, Adidev<\/strong>) in Opening Government, So debating is a gender now?<\/em> (Josh Kemp, Reed<\/strong>) in Opening Opposition, and stan red velvet<\/em> (anonymous, anonymous<\/strong>) in Closing Opposition. The adjudication panel was chaired by Clinton Wee Yuan <\/strong>together with Uphie, Hanna Zawawi, <\/strong>Inna Fermin, and TJ<\/strong>. The motion read “THBT it is in Mahathir’s interest to cede leadership of the Opposition to Anwar Ibrahim”.<\/p>\n

The Novice Final was won by\u00a0MWS More and More\u00a0<\/em>(Mikhail Taufiq, Arjun Gunalan)\u00a0<\/strong>speaking from Opening Opposition on the motion “THO the glorification of courage in popular culture.”\u00a0 Speaking against them were\u00a0IIUM 2<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>(Harith Johari, Sarrah Salihan) <\/strong>in Opening Government,\u00a0breaking is a privilege <\/em>(<\/em>Kiana, Guangxinyang Deng) <\/strong>in Closing Government, and\u00a0IIUM 1<\/em> (Imran Shahfizal, Simraat) in Closing Opposition. The adjudication panel was chaired by Abhilash Sane<\/strong>. Judging with them were Daud Loudoe<\/strong> and Felix Kurniawan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The top speaker of the tournament was\u00a0Rish,\u00a0<\/strong>Chinese Majority States pre-1965,\u00a0<\/em>with an average of 82.25 speaker points. The top novice speaker of the tournament was\u00a0Micol Cansino<\/strong>,\u00a0Shopee University A<\/em>, with an average of 79.25 speaker points.<\/p>\n

At this tournament, hosted over Zoom, there were repeated instances of hacks or other malicious tech disruptions, contributing to some delays.<\/p>\n

The Restricted Mara Open was hosted by the UT Mara Debating Society on the 27th and 28th of June with with Wan Husna<\/strong> and Haziq Ashraaf<\/strong> acting as main convenors. It featured 58 teams breaking to quarterfinals and novice semifinals. The Adjudication Core consisted of Silla Alam, Inna Fermin<\/strong>, and Brian Wong. Syafiq Razak\u00a0<\/strong>was responsible for the tab which can be found here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n
