What an amazing Worlds. Debattierclub Stuttgart had an amazing run, breaking into the ESL semi finals, with Andreas C. Lazar<\/strong> being best EFL speaker of the world and Michael Saliba<\/strong> being 4th best ESL debater of the world. Also Jana Gilke<\/strong> and Nils Haneklaus<\/strong> were very close to breaking to ESL quarters and missed out by a short margin. Wonderful start into the new year. “Excellent news from Botswana” are announced on the blog of Israeli Debating League:<\/a> For the second time in a row, an Israeli team brought home the title of ESL Champion. This year, that is Michael Shapira<\/strong> and Meir Yarom<\/strong> from team Haifa A<\/em>, in the previous year it was Yoni Cohen-Idov<\/strong> and Uri Merhav<\/strong> from team Tel Aviv A<\/em>. At Botswana, Yoni served as an outstanding judge as well as Anat Gelber<\/strong> who served on the adjudication panel of the grand final, the blog says.<\/p>\n

The German weekly newspaper DIE ZEIT, the main supporter of the Association of Debating Societies at Universities. <\/a> (VDCH), is reporting on Botswana WorldsChinese debaters tell about taboos and debating:<\/p>\n

“Bei unseren chinesischen Meisterschaften 2008 war der Au\u00dfenminister als Ehrengast geladen”, sagt Xi Li<\/strong>. Sie arbeitet an der Fremdsprachen-Universit\u00e4t in Peking, eine ihrer Aufgaben ist es, die chinesischen Debattiermeisterschaften auszurichten. Nat\u00fcrlich gibt es Tabuthemen, die Unabh\u00e4ngigkeit Taiwans oder Tibets z\u00e4hlen dazu. “Aber wir debattieren zum Beispiel \u00fcber die Abschaffung der Ein-Kind-Politik oder \u00fcber die Frage, ob China Pandas verschenken sollte oder nicht, um damit Politik zu betreiben.” Den Studenten helfe die Streiterei dabei, an den eigenen Analysef\u00e4higkeiten zu arbeiten, erkl\u00e4rt Jasmine Hu<\/strong>, Jura-Studentin aus Peking. “Mir nutzt das f\u00fcr mein Studium. Au\u00dferdem trainiere ich so mein Englisch.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Since 1981, debaters from all over the world have been competing at the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC) at alternating locations across the planet. It was not before 1996 that the British Parliamentary Style<\/a> became the mandatory format for this annual tournament. The African continent has been host to previous Worlds and has been staging the Worlds now for a third time, this year from 27 December 2010 to 4 January 2011 at the University of Botswana, Gaborone. Language of debate is English and there are three categories: \u201cMain\u201d for native speakers, \u201cESL\u201d (English as a Second Language, for those who prove great proficiency in English) and \u201cEFL\u201d (English as a Foreign Language, for those who studied English as a mere subject).<\/p>\n
