Bayreuth saves the SDM!

Bayreuth saves the SDM! The Southern German championship (SDM) 2011 will be staged in Bayreuth. After DebattierClub St. Gallen had to cancel their plans to host the SDM – due to an international conference they have no rooms for prelims – Debattierclub Bayreuth (DCBT) will now fill in for the Swiss to save the competition for the southern part of German speaking debate societies. However, accommodating debaters appropriately makes it necessary to reschedule that tournament: Debaters from southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy will have to come to Bayreuth on the weekend of 9 and 10 April. Usually being held simultaneously, the other regional ...

WUDC 2011: Unofficial ESL and EFL tabs

On his blog, Manos Moschopoulos compiled unofficial tabs for ESL and EFL respectively for the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC or Worlds). He did so based on data provided by Leela Koenig, judge at Botswana Worlds, and the competition's language committee. So far, official ESL and EFL tabs have not yet been published by the adjudication team of CA Logandran Balavijendran. According to Manos’ compilation, a correction of the Top Five EFL Speakers has to be noted: “Simon Belak (Ljubljana C) and Andreas Lazar (Stuttgart A) are joint top EFL speakers (initially, they were announced as 2nd and 1st respectively),” Manos ...

Review on BaWü 2010

Review on BaWü 2010 Heidelberg is going to be stage to the German Debating Championship (DDM) 2011, so many debaters in Germany see the Baden-Württembergian Open (BaWü) 2010 as a kind of dress rehearsal for DDM 2011. But superstitious minds in Germany have it that traditionally the dress rehearsal has to be a terrible disaster – if the real event shall be fine. However, neither the grouches nor the superstitious could find anything to mock about at BaWü 2010 last weekend. After Maike Jung, Jenny Holm and Kristina Seebacher organized the whole event smoothly, our reporter Gudrun Lux is really afraid that DDM 2011 ...

Halle enters Top Ten: VDCH hall of fame after the first competition in 10th ZEIT DEBATTEN season

Halle for the first time enters the Top Ten in the VDCH hall of fame, and now draws with Bonn. Munich and Greifswald are victims of Halle’s victory in Greifswald and lose a few places. A new entry on the list is Bremen (Hanse Debating Union, HDU). Jena underscores its position as one of Germany’s top clubs, and Mainz was able to secure a point this last weekend, although this was in debating, not in football. This was an awaited recovery, after Mainz had disappointed during the German Championships in June. The top seated Berlin Debating Union did not win any ...

Die Welt reports on show debate in Munich

The Newspaper Die Welt Kompakt reported on the show debate in Munich’s Atomic Café on 25 Ocotber. Die Welt’s author  Thomas Kletschke strongly emphasizes Lukas Windhager’s efforts, formerly treasurer of Debattierclub München. Kletschke on the debate with the motion “Manager in the morning, human being in the afternoon – we need a part time society”: “It was especially Windhagers closing argument that was convincing. In a part time society, those working full time would be the cash cows of society. ‘We could not live the way we’d like – we would have to live the way we should,’ he explained. Thus, ...

Show debate at the disco Atomic Café in Munich

“Manager in the morning, human being in the afternoon – we need part time working!” – This is the slogan of a show debate the Debattierclub München hosts on Monday, 25 October. Not a lecture hall is the venue of this debate, but the club Atomic Café in Munich. Lukas Windhager and Valerio Morelli are the speakers who are not too shy to compete rhetorically in front of an audience. Their counterparts are representatives from media and politics. Who wins is decided upon by the audience. The Atomic Café can be found in Neuturmstraße 5, Munich. The club is open ...

WUDC 2011: Updates and interesting facts

Less than four months until the worldwide debating circuit assembles in Gaborone, Botswana for the World Universities Debating Championships (WUDC, a.k.a. Worlds) 2011 from 27 December 2010 until 4 January 2011! But before you open your new textbooks and work on your Setswana, the official language besides English, stop and check the technicalities. You need to make sure you have made your final payments. The conveners point out that banks charge a fee up to 25 US-Dollars for international wire transfer. Those who forgot about that fee may pay cash or with a check during physical check-in in Gaborone in ...

Two debaters from Debatte Dortmund (DebaDo) set out last monday to visit debating clubs all over Germany. Jörn Hahn and Jens Schulze report from their first five stops. (The following part is not or not yet available in English.
