Cornell & Middlebury are 2019 Pan-American Debate Champions

The Spanish language division was won by Cornell A (c) Pan – American UDC Panama City 2019

The Pan-American Universities Debate Championships 2019 was hosted in Panama on April 19 – 22 and featured both English and Spanish language divisions.

The Spanish language final was won by Cornell A (Leo Grageda, Aurelien Salas) in Opening Government. Competing against them was PUCP A (Omar Espinoza, Jose Arturo Tipismana) in Opening Opposition, UdeG A (Itzcoatl Ilhuitcatl Bravo Rosas, Daniel Cuauhtli Aguilar Yanez) in Closing Government, and ITESM CEM A (Jubal Esteban Paez Belmonte, Mariana Morales Urbina) in Closing Opposition on the motion “ECCQ el involucramientode Estados Unidos en Panama (presencia militar, influencia cultural, relaciones economicas estrechas, etc) beneficia a los panamenos.”

The debate was chaired by Juanita Hincapie, with a panel of Julio Meyer, Laura Martinez, Nathania Engelhardt, and Randall Martinez.

Middlebury A in the Pan American English Division Final (c) Amanda Werner

The English language final was won by Middlebury A (Charlotte Massey, Nate Obbard) from Closing Opposition, opposing the motion “THS countries granting rights to nature”. In Opening Government was USAFA A (Samantha Potter, Ciera White), in Opening Opposition was UWI MONA B (Jonathan Atkins, Ronaldo Blake), and in Closing Government Morehouse A (Johnny Holloway, Noah Spicer).

The final was chaired by redacted, with a panel of Dan Lahav, Kiana Saint-Macary, Sebastian Dasso, and Vale Hernandez.

The English division top speaker was Charlotte Massey, with an average of 79.57

The Spanish division top speaker was Marcela Gómez Valdés, with an average of 78.71.

THBT that Western countries should revoke the citizenship of individuals that traveled to the Middle East to join Jihadi groups, even if they were minors at the time of their departure

ECCQ los países occidentales deberían revocar la ciudadanía a los individuos que se trasladaron a Medio Oriente para integrarse a grupos Jihadistas , incluso si eran menores de edad al momento de su traslado

THS state attempts to help their citizens find and sustain love (e.g. subsidizing subscriptions to matching agencies such as match.com, significant funding for research on what makes a relationship last, creating courses on how to woo and keep a spouse)

Algunos ejemplos notables son Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

EC preferiría unirse al Club de los 27 que vivir una vida anónima promedio.

English SF: THW prohibit businesses from adopting a public position on social justice issues (e.g. LGBTQIA+, racial relations, abortion, etc)

Spanish SF: Info Slide: El “balance de probabilidades” * es un estándar probatorio en el cual un individuo es declarado culpable de un crimen si se determina que es más probable que sí lo haya cometido a que no lo haya cometido.

En casos en que un funcionario público sea acusado de corrupción, EC reduciría el estándar probatorio al del “balance de probabilidades”* en vez del de la “duda razonable”.
