Prepare for Euros on the spot! From 11 to 13 February 2011 the National University of Ireland in Galway (NUIG) is open to debaters from all over Europe for the Galway Open. In Summer this year, the same locale will be stage to the European Universities Debating Championships (EUDC or Euros). To arrange the open tournament in February, two deb socs work together: The Law Society and the Literary and Debating Society. The convenors Evelyn Whyms and Tara Gibbons expect about 80 teams in Febaruary. As chief adjudicators (CA), they engaged Ruth Faller, also CA at Euros in summer, and Hugh Burns, EUDC finalist 2010. The Irish allure to debaters with lots of good food, even more alcohol and they promise: “We will do everything within our power to keep you entertained throughout the weekend,” as is reported on the Facebook website to the event.

Registration fees are 75 Euros per team which will be reduced to 50 Euros for non-Irish teams including guaranteed crash for those from abroad. Something unusual: With regard to judges, the rule reads n-2. That means: Register two teams, zero judges. Register three teams, one judge. And so forth. Registration will be open from 14 January at midnight. Send an e-mail to nationallawdebates[at]gmail.com.

  1. Ruth Faller says:

    Hi Everyone,
Just to clarify we are not enforcing n-2 for European teams, we know how difficult travel can be and while we would of course be delighted if institutions were willing to send judges we don’t want to stop anyone participating. If anyone has any further question please email me (ruth [dot] faller [at] gmail [dot] com) or the convenors nationallawdebates [at] gmail [dot] com and we will do our best to help in any way. Hope to see you all in Galway, if not next month then in August.
Thanks for all your wonderful work this site was fantastic for those of us not in Botswana,
    Ruth
