The team Real Friends Crash Out of Quarters Together (Milla Huuskonen, Katharina Jansen; Helsinki/Leiden) has won the Prague Open 2019 as Closing Government. In the final, they defeated the Opening Government Unironically Emulating Kafka (Uzair Tajuddin, Florens Rilling, Munich), the Opening Opposition Streitkultur A (Samuel Scheuer, Marius Hobbhahn, Tübingen) and the Closing Opposition Streitkultur B (Dominik Hermle, Joschka Braun). The debate on the motion “THBT the fight against Climate Change should include taking international action against sovereign countries (such as exclusion from international institutions, sanctions, military intervention, etc.), which allow environmental abuses through direct action or negligence” was judged by a panel of Noemie Gauthier (chair), Lovro Šprem, Tereza Gajdová, Petr Gongala and Nina Lampela.

Best speaker of the tournament was Samuel Scheuer with an average of 79.40 speaker points.

The tournament, which was attended by 24 teams, was organised by the Debatní klub Univerzity Karlovy with Anička Čámská and Martin Horák acting as main conveners. The CA panel consisted of Lovro Šprem and Sharmila Parmanand (not present due to delayed Visa).

Motions:

R1: THW cut government and parliament members wages and pension funds, if they run fiscal deficits.

R2: TH regrets the dominant narrative that moral progress is inevitable (e.g.”The moral arc of history bends towards justice”).

R3: THBT EU should not offer the UK another extension on Brexit after October 31.

R4: TH opposes the stigmatisation of romantic relationships built upon materialistic needs or exchanges (e.g. suggar-daddys, cougars, etc.).

R5: THBT secular states should not allow minority groups to implement their own family law systems.

SF: TH, as the Democratic party, regrets starting the impeachment process of President Trump.

F: THBT the fight against Climate Change should include taking international action against sovereign countries (such as exclusion from international institutions, sanctions, military intervention, etc.), which allow environmental abuses through direct action or negligence.
