MDD 2012: Biggest German language debating competition about to start

The German language debating championship is about to start in Vienna, Austria. Competing for the title are 68 teams from Germany, Switzerland and Austria, or debating societies from Aachen, Bayreuth, Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Frankfurt, Freiburg, Graz, Göttingen, Halle, Hamburg, Hannover, Heidelberg, Ingolstadt, Jena, Karlsruhe, Kiel, Klagenfurt, Köln, Konstanz, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Mainz, Marburg, München, Münster, Potsdam, Regensburg, Salzburg, Stuttgart, St. Gallen, Tübingen, Wien, Würzburg and Zürich. “Oxbridge“ among the top ten debating societies of the world? Of course, one may assume to find those two oldest deb socs in that list – but who else is to be listed there? Bayreuth saves the SDM!

Bayreuth saves the SDM! The Southern German championship (SDM) 2011 will be staged in Bayreuth. After DebattierClub St. Gallen had to cancel their plans to host the SDM – due to an international conference they have no rooms for prelims – Debattierclub Bayreuth (DCBT) will now fill in for the Swiss to save the competition for the southern part of German speaking debate societies. However, accommodating debaters appropriately makes it necessary to reschedule that tournament: Debaters from southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland and northern Italy will have to come to Bayreuth on the weekend of 9 and 10 April. A hot tournament – an insight into the Tilbury House Summer Open

32 teams found themselves in tropical heat - far above 32 Celsius - when they gathered in Cologne, Germany for the Tilbury House Summer Open on the first weekend in July. Tilbury House, the organizers, had forecast that weather and thankfully supplied the thirsty debaters with ample cool Kölsch (the local type of beer), of which there was no shortage even during the debates. Der DebatingClub St. Gallen hat am 27. Mai einen neuen Vorstand gewählt. Künftig wird Daniel Hosie, bisher bereits im Vorstand zuständig für Protokoll und Turniere, dem Club als Präsident vorstehen. An seiner Seite arbeiten Raffael Rimpf (Turniere und Protokollführer), Julian Bodenschatz (IT und Marketing) sowie Thomas Rottmoser ( Sponsoring und Kassier). 3. Professorendebatte in St. GallenAm Dienstag, 2. März, wird im schweizerischen St.Gallen zum dritten Mal eine Showdebatte zwischen Professoren und Studenten ausgetragen. Um 20.15 Uhr messen sich drei Mitglieder des VDCH-Clubs DebatingClub St. Gallen mit der "Creme de la Creme der Professoren" (so der DC St. Gallen): Günter Müller-Stewens, Ulrike Landfester, Anne van Aaken. Es werden zwei Themen zur Wahl gestellt, wobei sich das Publikum für eines entscheiden kann: "Steuerflucht ist Notwehr" oder "Schwiizerdütsch verpflichtend für alle".
