Malaysia WS wins Restricted Mara Open

The Grand Final of the Restricted Mara Open 2020 has been won by MWS MWS A & W (Wee-ern, Avinash).  Speaking in Closing Government, they faced Piali’s Peeps (Aryan, Adidev) in Opening Government, So debating is a gender now? (Josh Kemp, Reed) in Opening Opposition, and stan red velvet (anonymous, anonymous) in Closing Opposition. The adjudication panel was chaired by Clinton Wee Yuan together with Uphie, Hanna Zawawi, Inna Fermin, and TJ. The motion read “THBT it is in Mahathir’s interest to cede leadership of the Opposition to Anwar Ibrahim”.

The Novice Final was won by MWS More and More (Mikhail Taufiq, Arjun Gunalan) speaking from Opening Opposition on the motion “THO the glorification of courage in popular culture.”  Speaking against them were IIUM 2 (Harith Johari, Sarrah Salihan) in Opening Government, breaking is a privilege (Kiana, Guangxinyang Deng) in Closing Government, and IIUM 1 (Imran Shahfizal, Simraat) in Closing Opposition. The adjudication panel was chaired by Abhilash Sane. Judging with them were Daud Loudoe and Felix Kurniawan.

The top speaker of the tournament was Rish, Chinese Majority States pre-1965, with an average of 82.25 speaker points. The top novice speaker of the tournament was Micol CansinoShopee University A, with an average of 79.25 speaker points.

At this tournament, hosted over Zoom, there were repeated instances of hacks or other malicious tech disruptions, contributing to some delays.

The Restricted Mara Open was hosted by the UT Mara Debating Society on the 27th and 28th of June with with Wan Husna and Haziq Ashraaf acting as main convenors. It featured 58 teams breaking to quarterfinals and novice semifinals. The Adjudication Core consisted of Silla Alam, Inna Fermin, and Brian Wong.
