WUDC 2013: Break rules revised

Ex-EUDC-Präsident Jens Fischer und aktueller EUDC-Präsident Marcus Ewald im Gespräch in Belgrad. (Foto: Henrik Maedler)The break is now bigger than ever! 48 instead of 32 teams do break after nine preliminary rounds at this World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC or Worlds). That is twelve percent of all teams breaking instead of only eight percent. “Thus, the system we have now is fairer than any of the other proposed systems for the WUDC break,” Marcus Ewald, president of the EUDC Council, is sure. “Huh?” you may go, “how, mathematically speaking, can 48 teams break to octo-finals? How do they fit into eight rooms?” Well, with the new system, the first 16 teams break save to octo-finals. ...

WUDC Countdown 1: WUDC Berlin 2013 at a glanceIt is impossible to find out when the first participants of WUDC 2013 arrived in Berlin – too many have already been around and have spent some days in Europe, Germany or Berlin. During the day, more and more volunteers arrived and added massive manpower to the crew that already ran the WUDC scholarship program since the 25th of December. In order to prepare WUDC novices from countries that would not have participated in WUDC 2013 otherwise, a core volunteer team already started its work on Christmas day. Most of the other volunteers then left their home or university towns today ...

WUDC Countdown 5: Merry Christmas

WUDC Countdown 5: Merry Christmas[caption id="attachment_13818" align="alignright" width="400"] A picture WUDC participants will not encounter upon their arrival in German: Currently, the weather is untypically warm (+10°C). [/caption]In Berlin, for many WUDC organizers, there won’t be an ordinary Christmas celebration this year. Instead of spending Christmas with their families, the core of the WUDC Org Com is already on place in Berlin in order to work on the last preparations. But before the first participants of the WUDC scholarship program will arrive tomorrow, the WUDC Org Com will have its own very private Christmas celebration. Rumors tell us that the celebration will take place ...

When again will you be able to help out at such a big project? – Teresa Widlok talks about managing the participant affairs at WUDC.

We all know it out of our own tournament experience: waiting to get the desired slots, the first information about the schedule, and the innate hope that the OrgComm does not forget about all the requests you had. The sub-department ‘participant affairs’ will ensure that all participants feel well informed and taken care of so that they can travel to Berlin with no worries beforehand. Christian Landrock talked to Teresa Widlok, one of the divisional heads in charge of registration issues. Teresa has been debating for the ...

WUDC 2012: Day 1

Today, De La Salle Worlds in Manila kicked off for good! Day 1, however, was an easy one for debaters. Many of them were asked to take part in ESL and EFL interviews to confirm their status in the respective category: English as a Second Language and English as a Foreign Language. Adjudicators were challenged more thoroughly. They had to go through a test to determine their skill as a judge. It consisted of a live debate performed in front of the adjudicators, which they had to critique. The motion for that test debate read: "This house would ban all reporting ...
