WUDC 2015: And the winners are…

The World Universities Debating Championship 2015 in Malaysia has its champions:

And the winners are…

The Open Category

Sydney A (Edward Miller, Nick Chung) won the final in the Open Category. They debated the motion “This House believes that humanitarian organisations should, and should be allowed to, give funding, resources or services to illegal armed groups when this is made a condition for access to vulnerable civilians.” and won against Oxford A (Patrick Bateman, Natasha Rachman) in Opening Government, BPP A  (Steven Rajavinothan, Michael O’Dwyer) in Opening Opposition and Harvard A (Bo Seo, Fanelesibonge Mashwama) in Closing Opposition. The final was adjudicated by Shafiq Bazari (chair), Dominic Guinane, Amelia McLeod, Arinah Najwa, Danique van Koppenhagen, Karin Merckens, Brett Frazer, Simon Tunnicliffe and Tim Andrew.

English as a Second Language

CUHK A (Samuel Chan Kai Yui, Benson Lam Chak-Hin) won the final in the category English as a second language (ESL). They debated the motion “This House believes that liberal democracies that overthrow the governments of other states should impose power-sharing, even when this severely overrides or delays democratic representation.” and won against University of Dhaka A (Rishad Sharif, Raiha Nawal) in Closing Opposition, Stockholm A (Gustaf Lundgren, Johan Bage) in Opening Opposition and Universitas Indonesia A (Roderick Jonathan Martua, Boby Andika Ruitang) in Closing Government. The ESL-final was adjudicated by Madeline Schultz (chair), Daniel Swain, Manos Moschopoulos, Fred Cowell, Sarah Balakrishnan, Lucian Tan, Seb Templeton, Tomas Beerthuis and Harish Natarajan.

English as a Foreign Language

The champions of the category English as a foreign language (EFL) is the team from Adam Mickiewicz (Stanislaw StefaniakDawid Bartkowiak). They debated the motion “This House believes that progressive politicians in conservative societies should pander to bigots, racists, hardline conservatives and others with regressive views in attempting to win elections.” and won against MIPT A (Sergie Bazylik, Daria Zelenina) in Opening Government, SNUDA A (Sangwoo Park, Kyungmi Lee) in Closing Government and Binus International (Melissa Irene, Wilson Salim) in Closing Opposition. The EFL-final was judged by Jonathan Leader Maynard (chair), Nick Cross, Adam Hawksbee, Daniel Kirkby, Gavin Illsley, Yi-An Shih, Monica Ferris, Engin Arikan and Solange Handley.

R1: THR the decline of tightly integrated families
R2: THBT environmental movements should support climate engineering that fundamentally alters the environment in an attempt to combat global warming.
R3: THBT in areas of socio-economic deprivation, schools should train students in vocational skills to the exclusion of the liberal arts.
R4: THW prohibit the media from reporting on the mental illness of those accused of crimes.
R5: THBT the international community should cut off internet access in Syria.
R6: THBT developing countries should adopt economic development policies that heavily disincentivise urbanisation
R7: THW ban the research and production of moral enhancement drugs.
R8: THBT the US and EU should seek to promote peace by heavily subsidising Israeli businesses who invest in the Palestinian territories.
R9: TH, as a medical professional employed by the US military or security sevices, would, and would encourage others, to refuse orders to provide medical treatment to individuals undergoing ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’.

Masters’ R1: TH regrets the rise of art that celebrates gaining material wealth.

Masters’ R2: THBT judges should deliberately misinterpret constitutions to protect important liberties.

EFL Semis: THW ban its citizens from visiting illiberal states whose economies depend on tourism.
EFL Final: THBT progressive politicians in conservative societies should pander to bigots, racists, hardline conservatives and others with regressive views in attempting to win elections.

ESL QF: THBT the African-American community should actively oppose ‘broken windows policies’.
ESL Semis: THW strictly limit the replacement of workers with technology by companies.
ESL GF: THBT liberal democracies that overthrow the governments of other states should impose power-sharing, even when this severely overrides or delays democratic representation.

Double Octos: THW allow corporations to use hackers to retaliate against cyberattacks where the state seems unwilling or unable to do so.
Open Octos: THBT disadvantaged groups should emphasise their conformity with, rather than distinctiveness from, dominant culture, as a strategy for improving their social position.
QF: TH regrets the decline of secular pan-Arab nationalism.
Semis: THBT all states should create special economic zones in cities, where all economic activities (except the purchase of goods and services) are carried out by women.
GF: THBT humanitarian organisations should, and should be allowed to, give funding, resources or services to illegal armed groups when this is made a condition for access to vulnerable civilians.

And the judges and teams of the Association of German Speaking University Debating Societies did…        

Potsdam A, Moritz Kirchner and Mathias Hamann, broke into the semifinals of the EFL-category. They debated the motion “This House would ban its citizens from visiting illiberal states whose economies depend on tourism.” in Closing Opposition and unfortunatly lost against Seoul NUDA A and MIPT A. John-Thomas Eltringham (Berlin) judged one of the EFL-semifinals and a Partial Double Octofinal. Rebecca Irvine (Berlin) broke as well as an adjudicator and judged an EFL-semifinal and one of the octofinals. Patrick Ehmann (Berlin) judged one of the ESL-quarterfinals and a quarterfinal in the open category. Dessislava Kirova (Berlin) adjudicated an ESL-semifinal and a Partial Double Octofinal. Kai Dittmann (Berlin) was in the panel of an octofinal as well.

    It may be interesting to note that the WUDC champions in the EFL category were a scholarship team who couldn’t have made it to Malaysia without the funding.
