Die Themen des Turniers im Überblick:

Round 1: This House Supports generational quotas for parties in parliament.

Round 2: This House Believes That art* trends do more harm than good. *e.g. fashion, interior design, paintings, movies, music, etc.

Round 3: Infoslide: The grey economy encompasses economic activities that are legal in themselves but are not reported to the authorities, meaning they evade taxes and bypass government regulations. Examples include paying service workers in cash without declaring income (e.g. plumbers, doctors, etc.). By the way, this is not the black market which involves illegal goods or services.

In countries where the grey economy is prominent, This House Would take significant steps to restrict activity in the grey economy.

Round 4: Infoslide: An aggressive response to an invasion includes enacting sweeping sanctions, expelling diplomats, military action and abandoning bi- and multilateral collaboration. A passive response to an invasion may instead include seeking agreement through negotiations and mediation.

Assuming the US successfully invades Greenland without casualties on either side, This House, as the EU, Would choose a passive response rather than an aggressive response.

Round 5: This House Supports a stigma against selling out.

Novice Final: Infoslide: For the purpose of this debate, traditional workplaces aim to attract young talent through high salaries and clear opportunities for professional advancements. Alternatively, „employee-centric workplaces“ aim to attract talent by emphasizing holistic benefits such as flexible work structures, mental health awareness and social events.

As a talented university graduate, This House Would significantly prioritize an employee-centric workplace when applying for jobs.

ESL Final: Infoslide: „Coordinated Inauthentic Behaviour“ refers to large-scale organised efforts that use tactics such as astroturfing*, social media bots and fake accounts, and the spread of often exaggerated information through other unofficial channels to artificially shape public opinion.

*Astroturfing is the practice of disguising a coordinated campaign as natural grassroots support.

This House Believes That democratic elites in the West (e.g., bipartisan elected officials, civil society leaders, and pro-democracy institutions) Should actively fund and deploy Coordinated Inauthentic Behaviour to counter authoritarian narratives in the digital sphere.

Quarterfinals: This House Opposes the romanticization of pre-colonial societies.

Semifinals: Infoslide: Jodie and Mary were born conjoined at the lower abdomen. Jodie had a functioning heart and lungs, while Mary’s body depended entirely on Jodie’s heart to survive. Doctors believed that without separation, both girls would die within the first five years of their lives because of the strain on Jodie’s heart. However, if they were separated, Mary would certainly die, while Jodie had a strong chance of living a relatively normal life. The operation needed to be done shortly after birth, or it would have become virtually impossible. The parents, devout Catholics, refused consent for the surgery. The hospital sought court permission to proceed. The case went to the Court of Appeal, which ruled that the operation was lawful. The surgery went ahead, Mary died shortly after, and Jodie survived.

This House Believes That the court intervention was legitimate.

Grand Final: Infoslide: It is the year 2296. 250 years ago, nuclear wars ended the modern world. Today, smaller and more scattered settlements live in the wasteland, where they often struggle to feed themselves, and violent disputes are frequent. Many smaller factions fight for peace and order, but two larger factions gain the most support: „The Brotherhood“ is a religious group aiming to establish peace through religion. They follow a post-apocalyptic version of Abrahamic religions, and religious leadership is often granted to community elders and members who best live by religious scripture. The Brotherhood use force mainly for defence from rebels in the wasteland. „The New Republic“ is a political group with military powers aiming to establish peace through democracy. They hold democratic elections for their members and work to rebuild pre-apocalyptic political institutions of governance. The New Republic have previously used their military equipment and powers to fight off violent rebels and expand their territory.

This House Prefers The Brotherhood over The New Republic for establishing peace.
